Guidelines What is this Competition?
The Phillip Pendal Young Heritage Award encourages students to demonstrate their understanding of the importance of the photographic record as a history of people and place in the City of South Perth. It encourages excellence in historical writing and honours the work of the late Phillip Pendal, politician, historian, writer and founding president of the City of South Perth Historical Society. The competition aims to encourage the City’s students to participate in the recording and research of our heritage. It has been run annually since 2010.
Who can enter?
Any Year 1 to 12 student who lives in the City Of South Perth or who attends a school in the City of South Perth (This includes the suburbs of Como, Karawara, Kensington, Manning, Salter Point and Waterford). You can enter now and entries close at midnight on Sunday 5th May 2024.
What do I do to enter?
1. Download the entry form - CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THIS ENTRY FORM
2. Take a photo of a person, place, object or building in the City of South Perth.
3. Original photos are preferred and may score more highly, however in cases where it is more appropriate to use an existing photograph, this is permitted. Existing photographs must be free of, or clearly acknowledge copyright.
4. Write a factual historical essay that tells the story of the photograph and explains how this story relates to its locality and to the broader history of the City of South Perth. The written essay is to be between 100 and 800 words, having regard to the entrant’s year level.
5. Give your entry a relevant and creative Title.
6. Email your entry including Photo, factual history essay, bibliography and entry form to info@southperthhistoricalsociety.org
